Resilience is a delightful book of short stories. Tales of youth and aging. Love and loss. Life and death. Jim Bates has the ability to make you feel the hometown atmosphere of his characters, as well as to laugh at youth and, to survive the delicate balance that life can be. My favorite story was Sugarfoot, the story of a man who gets out of prison and immediately steals a car and gets lost in the desert. The searchers depend on a tracking dog named Sugarfoot. I think I enjoyed this story most of all because it was so different from the others. I had read a good deal of this author’s work, so I was excited to see some new material in this book as well as some of my favorites.
